Volunteers are at the heart of our work, helping us deliver meaningful, inclusive programmes across Medway and beyond. Whether you’re new to volunteering or bringing professional experience, we welcome your passion, commitment, and creativity.

1. Advisory Board Members

We are seeking dedicated individuals to join our Advisory Board and support the strategic development of our organisation and community programmes, including the Benjamin Zephaniah Digital Archival Library.

What we’re looking for:
People with experience or interest in:

  • Arts, culture, and heritage

  • Community development or youth work

  • Education and libraries

  • Criminal justice and rehabilitation

  • Research, academia, or social sciences

  • Business, fundraising, finance, or governance

 

Commitment:

  • A minimum 12‑month term

  • Quarterly board meetings

  • Occasional additional support as needed

  • The role is unpaid—reasonable expenses are covered

 

Training Provided:

  • Induction and role‑specific training

  • Ongoing support and guidance

2. Event & Workshop Volunteers

Event volunteers support the delivery of creative workshops, exhibitions, community events, well-being sessions, and creative development opportunities.

Training Provided:

  • Induction training

  • Role‑specific guidance (events, safeguarding, accessibility)

  • Ongoing support from staff and senior volunteers

Roles may include:

  • Supporting workshop delivery

  • Assisting with setup and visitor welcome

  • Helping with accessibility needs

  • Social media, photography, and documentation

  • Creative assistance (materials, layout, hands‑on help)

  • General event support

 

Commitment:

  • Minimum 6‑week volunteering period

  • Flexible scheduling depending on availability

  • The role is unpaid—reasonable expenses are covered

Advisory Board Member

Advisory Board Members play a key role in guiding the strategic, ethical, and community direction of The Black Art Hub CIC.


This role is perfect for individuals passionate about arts, culture, education, community development, or social justice.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the organisation’s long‑term vision and community impact

  • Attend quarterly board meetings (online or in person)

  • Advice on programmes, safeguarding, inclusion, and growth

  • Offer specialist insight (arts, education, governance, business, youth engagement, etc.)

  • Uphold our values as an all‑Black, female‑led organisation

Commitment:

  • 12‑month minimum term

  • Occasional additional support outside meetings

 

Compensation:

  • Unpaid, but reasonable expenses are covered

 

Training:

  • Full induction

  • Ongoing support and development opportunities

Event & Workshop Volunteer

Event volunteers help deliver our creative and community programmes, supporting the running of workshops, exhibitions, well-being sessions, and local events.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with setting up and supporting workshops and events

  • Welcome visitors and provide accessibility support

  • Help with creative materials, documentation, and social media

  • Support artists, facilitators, and the community during events

  • Promote a safe, inclusive, culturally grounded environment

 

Commitment:

  • Minimum 6‑week volunteering period

  • Flexible schedule based on availability

 

Compensation:

  • Unpaid, but reasonable expenses are covered

 

Training:

  • Full induction

  • Role‑specific guidance (safeguarding, accessibility, event support)

The Black Art Hub is powered by passionate volunteers who believe in our mission. Join us and help shape the future of Black British arts.

Volunteer Roles:

Event Support: Help with exhibitions, workshops, and community events—setting up, welcoming visitors, and assisting with activities.

Library assistants support the Benjamin Zephaniah Library with cataloguing books, managing loans, and organising the collection.

Social Media & Communications Help spread the word about our work through social media, newsletter writing, and content creation.

Workshop Assistant: Support workshop facilitators with preparation and delivery.

Fundraising Support: Assist with fundraising campaigns, donor communications, and grant research.

Research & Archiving Help document exhibitions, research Black British artists, and organise our archives.

Administrative Support: General office support, data entry, and organisational tasks.

What We Offer Volunteers:

  • Meaningful work supporting Black British arts

  • Skills development and training

  • References for future employment/education

  • Access to our events and workshops

  • Connection to creative community

  • Expenses covered (travel, meals during shifts)

Time Commitment: Flexible—from one-off event support to regular weekly hours. We work around your schedule.
